Trump is held in contempt for not turning over documents

• Monday, a New York judge held Donald Trump in civil contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena for documents in an investigation into the Trump Organization’s business practices. [National Public Radio/Ilya Marritz]
• The decision came amid New York’s investigation into whether the organization lied about the value of its real estate to get favorable loans and tax breaks. Earlier this month, the state attorney general said she found evidence of misleading statements. [Guardian/Adam Gabbatt]
• In court, Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, said that she tried to locate the documents, but Trump does not have them. He’ll be fined $10,000 per day until he produces them. [CNN/Sonia Moghe and Kara Scannell]

Beijing is mass testing millions to prevent a Covid-19 outbreak

• Beijing began mass testing most of its 22 million residents for Covid-19 on Monday, hoping to avoid a broader outbreak that could lead to citywide lockdowns. [CNN/Nectar Gan]
• Beijing has reported 80 cases since Friday. Officials are trying to completely eradicate the disease in line with China’s zero-covid policy. [Al Jazeera]
• Under the testing plan, about 75 percent of Beijing residents must take three coronavirus tests in the next five days. Those on the city’s outskirts and rural districts won’t have to undergo testing. [New York Times/Keith Bradsher]
• Some residents are panic buying amid fears that a lockdown is coming. A Beijing official asked people not to leave the city for Labor Day break (April 30-May 4), adding to those fears. [Quartz/Jane Li]
