Product Habits - I changed my mind about changelogs

I initially thought a changelog was a great approach to product marketing. Especially when you are in early stages of development and you need to rally people around your brand by showing constant improvement.

I knew it was important but I didn’t think it was critical.

What I learned in the last few weeks is that a changelog can do so much more for you.

Just like spec documents, roadmaps or prototypes. I used to think of them as an afterthought, now I consider them all critical steps of every product initiative. That now includes changelogs.

Creating and regularly updating a public changelog can be one of the most impactful ways to motivate your team to continuously add value for customers.

Your responses made me see this. They helped us see the tremendous value that producing a changelog can add for a product.

That’s why we’ve decided a changelog needs to be taken very seriously at FYI.

We are going to start an internal changelog first that’s shared with our team. Our goal is to get in the good product habit of adding to it each week. This is one of the big insights you gave me.

If we launch a changelog and ignore it, that’s worse than not having one at all. Once we have the right habits as a team, we’ll open it up publicly.

Thank you again for all your insights. You changed my mind =)
