Retire with Money
I have some bittersweet news. After six great years, I’m leaving Money for a new opportunity. I’m heeding the words of the late Orville Rogers, a centenarian runner I interviewed for my favorite story I wrote here. He said, "Some people think I run because I can, but that's backward — I can because I do."  Sit with that for a minute and think of all the things you’ve said you can’t do. Often, what you’re really saying is, I haven’t done that…yet. Today’s Reader of the Week hadn’t set foot in a weight room until her mid-40s, and now at 59 she’s a national powerlifting champion. Whether it’s a physical feat, a creative endeavor or a career move, show yourself what you can because you do.

So I'm off to a new challenge. Writing this newsletter was a joy, and I loved getting to know some of you personally. You can always reach me at prep4retirement@gmail.com. And watch your inbox, because Retire with Money isn’t going anywhere!

Best wishes,

Elizabeth

Timely Retirement News, Insights and Advice

People underestimated the costs by more than sevenfold.

Reader of the Week

Please welcome our Reader of the Week! Laurie MacDonald, 59, is a business owner and powerlifter who lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming with Rob, her husband of 40 years.
What are you up to these days?

Together, Rob and I have spent the past 32 years building two businesses in Wyoming. One business, a landscape contracting company, started as mowing the neighborhood lawns when our two kids were little. That expanded into a commercial construction company (we do very little mowing these days), one of the largest in the state.

The other business is property investing; we've built up a portfolio of a few dozen residential apartments and houses, as well as a few commercial properties. That income will carry us through retirement and leave a nice legacy for our two kids.

Our daughter has been helping us with both businesses and is poised to "take over the Empire" someday soon so that we can fully retire to our second home in southern Nevada.

Nice! What about your hobbies?

Our hobbies are currently travel (we have been limited due to COVID but we managed a trip to see family in Tbilisi last September), golf, and I am an elite competitive Powerlifter in the USA Powerlifting federation, hoping to win my fifth national championship this coming June in Las Vegas. I've been competing since 2009.

Wow! How did you get started in that?

My powerlifting career started when I was 46. I had never seen a weight room. Since then, I have competed in multiple national and world championships, in Las Vegas, Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, Texas, Finland and South Africa. I'm a four-time National Champion. In three World Masters Championships, I got the silver medal each time. My best lifts are 142.5kg squat (314 pounds), 95kg bench press (209 pounds) and 162.5kg deadlift (358 pounds) for a 400 kg (national record) total. That was in 2019. Covid put a pause on things for a few years, but I am preparing for USAPL Raw Nationals in Las Vegas in a few weeks.

I discovered powerlifting by accident. I wanted to be a better runner, I was training for long races and sprint triathlons. We found a personal trainer, Tim, who told us that strength training would increase our race times. I was skeptical but he was right, I got to be a faster runner. But, I found out that I was a much more talented weight lifter, and I loved the workouts! Tim was competing in a meet, and he casually mentioned that they needed more women on the team. I signed up and went to my first meet in May of 2010. At that meet, I did bench press only, and lifted 110 pounds on my third attempt.

We all start somewhere! Don't think you will never reach great heights. It's all about showing up consistently and working to be better than you were last week.
