💸 A $30k website - Here's How You Can Turn It Into a $60k Website
Nano Thought We might already be in a recession. Do you have a plan to not only survive, but prosper in a down economy? Lots of people still do well in a recession. Airbnb, Netflix, and plenty of other huge companies started during recessions. Here's my advice: You need to own an audience. If you document your expertise and build a following around your personal brand, you'll never run out of opportunities. You can sell a consulting service, partner up as an affiliate for products your audience would like, sell a course, or a hundred other things. The bottom line is, you need to own the audience. It's risky to just have your audience on Twitter or another platform you don't control. Get them on your website or newsletter as well as your social media profiles. This Week’s Nano Flip Opportunity This week we're looking at a camera website. Based on the monthly revenue and a 36x monthly revenue multiple, I'd say this site is worth $30k or so. You may know my formula by now: I only buy sites that I know I can grow substantially. You can probably do fine if you buy these sites and just keep them where they are revenue-wise, but the really money comes from increasing the value of the asset. Here's what I'd do:
A newsletter is insanely valuable for a brand. Instead of relying on your customers to remember you and order later, you know have their contact info and can reach out regularly with a newsletter. This site gets over 9,000 unique visitors a month. Convert 2% of those into newsletter subscribers, and you're 180 people to your list every single month. In my experience, a newsletter subscriber is worth $0.25 to $0.50 per month in a niche like this. So each month you'd be adding an additional $45 to $90 in incremental monthly revenue. Let's say after 6 months of making those changes, you've increased the monthly revenue of the website from $839 to $1,444, just from the 2 sponsored posts and my new email list. That doesn't even factor in changes you could make to the site's content, SEO strategy, or affiliate programs that could increase revenue. Let's say you're also able to grow the existing revenue at 2% per month with those changes (Thats pretty conservative). After 6 months, the site's total new revenue would be $1,532. So in 6 months, you would have created an incremental $693 in revenue, which means:
So after buying this site for $30k, you'd have collected 6 month's worth of revenue plus you'd be able to sell the asset for about $25k more than you paid for it. Without even crunching the numbers, you can see that you'd easily clear a 100% return on investment. As always, do your own research! This is a hypothetical scenario. Nano Tips If you missed this thread I posted last year, give it a read.
It's all about how you can make great money by building and monetizing an email list. Which might be useful if working on a deal like the one above. Email lists and websites go hand-in-hand. The most profitable brands have both. Check out this episode of Builders Build, we dove into strategies for growing a website (but a lot of it ca be applied to email lists as well). We talked SEO strategies, growth levers you can pull, how to create content, and more. And if you want more of our podcast, check out this week's episode. It's all about how to build a personal brand on Twitter, including how to brand yourself, create content, and meet important people. Thanks for reading! I'll hit your inbox next week with another breakdown of a website flip. Thanks from the Nano Flips team (James) P.S.
