​1. 5 interesting things about how Facebook works​

TL;DR: Five insights about Facebook engineering culture.

1. Engineers have autonomy in choosing their team (more flexibility than all companies), deciding what to work on, and are compensated above most tech functions.
2. Developers can easily move between teams and this process is much easier than in similar companies.
3. Facebook has four competences that engineers are measured on: impact, direction, people and engineering excellence. Impact - business results. Direction - your influence on the vector of a team, company, or industry. People - non-technical impact on the organization, like mentoring, onboarding, interviewing. Engineering excellence - quality of code, quality of architectural solutions, improvement of engineering practices.
4. Teams have complete autonomy in choosing how and what to do. Because of this, some teams’ processes may not be similar to others.
5. Facebook has their own in-house products for all the tools we are used to, like github, jira, slack, etc. This is a well-known fact I think.

2. State of CSS 2022​

TL;DR: An overview of current and future CSS features.

Interesting things that await us in 2022 and beyond:

• cascade layers - will allow you to set the importance of applying a group of styles.
• container queries ❤️ - elements will be able to respond to the size or style of the parent container, it's like media queries (for example, if the parent div is less than 200px, make padding 10px)
• accent-color - will allow you to add a brand color, which will change the default color of the “active” elements (currently blue) for the color of your choice.
• nesting selectors.

3. How We Grow from Incidents (Spotify)​

TL;DR: What Spotify developers understood about incidents.

• Spotify throws a lot of effort into researching what happened. At least one developer spends most of their day doing this. They call it “trade productivity now for productivity later.”
• 60%+ of incidents could have been prevented with better test coverage and alerts.
• Sometimes breaking your own system is a good thing (you bet)

I re-watched this presentation while writing this email and once again realized how great it was! Such an amount of excitement! I again experienced all the same emotions of anticipation of something...revolutionary and new as the first time. What a man.
