Inflation is still running hot!

The April Consumer Price Index report from the BLS showed a slight decrease in headline inflation, dipping to 8.3%. But core inflation, which strips out volatile commodities to give a more accurate picture of the underlying effects of inflation, remains at a troublesome level of 6.2%.

Almost everything that consumers purchase each day is more expensive. One place they’re especially hurting: at the grocery store. The price of food increased 9.4% in April, marking the largest 12-month increase in over four decades. 

President Joe Biden has made inflation his top domestic priority and has devised a plan to rein it in. But much of that plan involves new initiatives that’ll have to pass in Congress—and who knows when, or if, that might actually happen.

For now, consumers will have to get strategic with their money to try to stretch their dollars further. We’ve got a few smart ideas below, ranging from rethinking your budget to saving on your energy bill.
