Prioritization is arguably the most underrated skill of effective leadership, and there’s a reason for that. Simply put, most people are thinking about it all wrong. We love to jump right into a laundry list of to-dos and live for the dopamine hit each time we cross something off, but is that the best way to think about it?

Instead of to-do lists and apps, put prioritization on a slightly elevated plane. So when you think about priorities, consider these two dimensions: 1) the right work and 2) the right way.

To determine what “the right work” is, try using The Most Important Task methodology (aka MIT, but don’t confuse it with the school), in which you create a list every morning that has your three (yes, only three!) most important tasks for the day. This is separate from your everyday to-do list. In fact, don’t even put it on the same paper or in the same file. To determine what your MITs are, ask yourself: What is the one thing I could do today that would make a significant difference in my life/role/project? Then, ask that again two more times. Nothing else comes before these items.

Now that you have the work nailed down, it’s time for “the right way.” Enter the The Eisenhower Matrix, a great tool for categorizing tasks based on urgency and importance.

This simple two-by-two framework says that highly important, highly urgent tasks should be minimized as much as possible because they are essentially like fire drills. They can even derail MITs if you aren’t careful. So, items that are highly important but not urgent can be scheduled, and tasks that are not important but urgent can be delegated. And finally, things that are neither urgent nor important should be dismissed.

Remember your MITs first. Then approach all other tasks strategically to ensure you manage them effectively. Of course, you can use any app you wish to keep your lists, for you are a master prioritizer in the making!—Karen Hebert-Maccaro, Morning Brew’s Queen of the Eduverse

I am most certainly team Slack. Channels, replies in threads, emoji reactions, pinned messages, groups for fun, and groups for business…You can’t beat it. Some people delete their emails. Some never read them and have thousands unread. Some open and respond immediately (and even Reply All ). I find [using email] much harder to keep track of people’s work and responsibilities than using Slack.—Drew

It’s absolutely a balance! Email is great for getting real work done. If I want someone to do something that will take them more than five minutes, they get an email. Slack or Teams are good for quick wins, casual chats, and last-minute updates. It’s all about using the right tool for the job.—Eileen
