Hello my friends.

Here's what I picked this week, enjoy!

1. Learnings from 5 years of tech startup code audits

TL;DR: 16 insights about products and technologies after 5 years of tech startup code audits.

The author has been auditing startups for 5 years (code base audit, finding vulnerabilities) and now shares his insights. Here are four that caught my eye:

  • The startups that now are very successful usually had an almost brazenly ‘Keep It Simple’ approach to engineering (their technical solutions were primitively simple). On the other hand, the startups where the code was written in such a way that you wanted to say, “Wow, that’s very clever,” almost all died. And the main thing they all had in common was the immediate transition to microservices, distributed computing, and large amounts of distributed messaging 🔥
  • Sometimes, the biggest products with a huge set of features were created by small, but very strong teams (it turns out, 10x engineers are not a myth)
  • Fuzzing (automated software testing technique that involves providing invalid, unexpected, or random data) was very effective in terms of hours spent on it to the number of vulnerabilities found, especially on large codebases.
  • Almost everyone had securitization problems with JWT tokens and webhooks. With webhooks, people often forgot to authenticate incoming requests. With JWT tokens, people could not properly authenticate the token or could just trust it by default.

2.
Programming in the Apocalypse

TL;DR: 3 engineers decided to have a good time at night in a park in Denmark and speculate on what development will look like in 2050, when global warming will have a significant impact on the world.

The article is very cool. Where else can you read about the effect of high sea levels on application containerization or the effect of fires on CPU prices?

Bottom line, it's interesting to read as fiction and sad to imagine that even half of what's written there turns out to be true.

3.
Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?

TL;DR: Discussion on HN "If Kubernetes is kind of designed to simplify infrastructure-related work, then why are there so many devops engineer jobs?"
