UK Halts Migrant Flight

The first flight scheduled to deport asylum seekers from Britain was grounded at the last minute yesterday, after the European Court of Human Rights intervened, citing a risk of harm to migrants on board. The flight was part of a new controversial partnership between the UK and Rwanda, in which migrants from the Middle East, Sudan, and other countries who enter Britain illegally via the English Channel would be sent to the East African nation for asylum-processing.

Under the plan, the UK would provide an initial investment of about $157M to Rwanda. In exchange, Rwanda would offer migrants who are granted asylum housing, healthcare, and support for five years, or until they are self-sufficient. Migrants sent to Rwanda will also be free to return to their homeland, or any other country that will accept them.

Critics have argued the policy is inhumane and question Rwanda's safety. The UK Supreme Court is set to hold a judicial review in July to decide on the policy's legality.

Lightning Eye Three-Peat

The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Colorado Avalanche face off tonight in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals (8 pm ET, ABC), with the Lightning looking to become the fourth franchise in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup three years in a row.

Tampa Bay is led by All-Star goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy—who held the top-seeded Florida Panthers to three goals in four games in the second round—and top scorer Steven Stamkos. Across the ice, the red-hot Avalanche enter their first finals in more than two decades, having lost only two games this postseason. Led by defensive phenom 23-year-old Cale Makar, Colorado swept the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference finals.

Analysts view the series as evenly matched, with both teams featuring high-powered offenses and stout net defense. The Avalanche will have home-ice advantage and enter the finals as the Vegas favorite to lift the Cup.

Biden Plans Saudi Trip

President Joe Biden will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman as part of a trip to the Middle East in July, the White House announced yesterday. The trip comes amid record-high gas prices, intensified by sanctions on Russian oil over the war in Ukraine, and after OPEC agreed to increase oil output by around 650,000 barrels per day—or more than 200,000 above expectations. Saudi Arabia is the third-largest oil producing country behind the US and Russia.

The visit is seen as an attempt to reset relations with Saudi Arabia and represents a reversal of Biden’s 2019 campaign promise to isolate the country over the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. In a joint letter, human rights groups asked Biden to set certain conditions or cancel the trip.

The trip will also include visits to Israel and the West Bank as part of a virtual summit with several other world leaders.

SOPHISTICATED SKINCARE

At the intersection of NASA and MIT is one of Popular Science’s 100 greatest inventions of 2021—it's Droplette, a new skin-health system that’s questioning what we know about skincare.

Collagen makes up roughly 80% of our skin, doing its part to keep our skin firm and hydrated. And as we age, collagen breaks down, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. But we can use moisturizers with collagen in them, right? Guess again. Collagen is 300x larger than what our skin can naturally absorb, so those expensive serums and moisturizers are like throwing a torpedo at a dart board. The good news: Droplette has a solution. Developed by MIT scientists, Droplette is the only way for collagen to absorb into your skin topically. It turns ingredients into a tiny micro-mist small enough to actually penetrate the skin barrier, leading to radiant, glowing skin.

Check out what Newsweek called a “2021 Medical Marvel” that's “pushing the technological boundaries of health care.” Take 20% off the Droplette device with our 1440-exclusive offer today.
