A Decade

Amy Lowell

When you came, you were like red wine and honey,
And the taste of you burnt my mouth with its sweetness.
Now you are like morning bread,
Smooth and pleasant.
I hardly taste you at all for I know your savour,
But I am completely nourished.

Amy Lowell, born on February 9, 1874 in Brookline, Massachusetts, was a poet, critic, and editor affiliated with the Imagist movement. Her books include What’s O’Clock (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1925), which posthumously won her the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She died on May 12, 1925.
