Have people always been weird about women's eyebrows? Yes. Egyptians used kohl or mesdemet to achieve the strong eyebrows seen in portraits surviving from the age of the pharaos. In Greece and Rome a "hairy unibrow" was considered a sign of both beauty and a sign of wisdom; women might use kohl, or "patches made of goat hair glued onto the forehead", to achieve the right look (1,900 words)
