WNBA star Brittney Griner makes direct appeal to President Biden for her freedom, asks in letter to 'please don't forget about me.'
ESPN (Center) • Factual Grade 76% • 3 min read

Griner's trial on charges that she tried to smuggle vape cartridges with hashish oil into Russia began Friday. Legal experts and U.S. officials have described the proceeding as a "show trial" that is certain to end in a conviction. Griner's family and supporters have tried to ratchet up pressure on the White House and the U.S. State Department to negotiate a trade that would bring her home.
    ...
Russian state media outlets, which typically operate under government instruction, have reported that there are discussions about trading Griner for a Russian man who is serving a 25-year sentence for financing terrorism. U.S. officials are also trying to secure the release of another American who has been in Russian custody since 2018.
    ...
A representative for Griner would not detail how [the letter] got from Griner's cell to the White House. Griner, detained since mid-February, has been able to send and receive notes to friends and family through her Russian attorneys, although all the messages have been monitored.

Is Covid-19 still a pressing issue in the United States?

534 votes, 51 comments

Context: Covid-19 cases increase, driven by omicron subvariants.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The key word is "pressing" here. Yes, obviously Covid is still an issue. Yes people are still dying from it. But at this point treatments have become more effective, and fatality rates have drastically fallen per infection. At this point there is not much more that can be done. Covid is here forever, just like the flu and the common cold. It will reap its thousands every year. The world/US can and must move on to more pressing issues.
