NEED TO KNOW

Breaking news: Japan's former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while giving a speech at a campaign event for a fellow politician. Police arrested a suspect at the scene. This is a breaking story, see updates here.

UK Power Shuffle Begins

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday he would resign once his successor is chosen, setting off a scramble in the governing Conservative Party to select the country's next leader.

Top contenders will begin jockeying to replace Johnson next week, with party lawmakers holding a number of elimination-style voting rounds until only two candidates remain. Card-carrying Conservatives around the UK will then vote by mail to decide the winner, though it remains unclear whether a final vote will be held before a six-week summer recess that starts July 21.

Johnson stated at a cabinet meeting yesterday no fiscal decisions would be made in the interim, which could be months.

The announcement caps a three-year tenure where Johnson led the UK out of the European Union, oversaw the pandemic response, and supported Ukraine against Russian aggression. See a timeline of Johnson's tenure here

Chauvin Sentencing

A former Minneapolis police officer was sentenced yesterday to 21 years in prison for federal civil rights violations during the killing of George Floyd in May of 2020. Derek Chauvin was previously convicted of state-level murder and manslaughter charges for Floyd's death, for which he received a sentence of more than 22 years in prison.

Under the arrangement, Chauvin will serve his federal sentence at the same time as his state sentence—but will now be required to serve almost 18 years of his sentence before his earliest chance of parole. The deal also requests Chauvin be held in a federal prison, where experts say he may be safer and subject to fewer restrictions.

He is currently being held in isolation at Minnesota's only maximum security prison—his final location will be determined by the Bureau of Prisons.

James Caan Dies

Prolific actor James Caan passed away late Wednesday at the age of 82, according to a statement from family members yesterday.

The native New Yorker's career spanned almost six decades, including roles in "Brian's Song" (1971), "Thief" (1981), "Misery" (1990), and "Elf" (2003), among others. His most well-known role was that of Sonny Corleone in the 1972 film adaptation of "The Godfather," for which he received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. He also gained a reputation for turning down potentially blockbuster roles, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) and "Apocalypse Now" (1979).

A cause of death was not specified. See Caan's life in photos here.

TIME TO TRIPLE DOWN?

When The Motley Fool recommends a stock, we take a look. When we see the same recommendation pop up a second time, our ears perk up. And when we see that same stock being recommended a third time, we drop everything.

But it doesn’t happen often. In fact, in the entire 20+ year history of The Motley Fool, only 31 stocks have earned this “triple-down” distinction. While not all recommendations have performed this well, these 31 hallowed picks include Netflix in 2004 (now up 9,924%), Amazon in 2002 (now up 14,727%), and Shopify in 2016 (now up 952%). And now, The Motley Fool is announcing their latest triple-down pick. And you may have heard of it before.

In fact, in its long history, this stock has minted its fair share of millionaires on impressive (and relatively consistent) returns. Join The Motley Fool for as little as $1.90/week* and see the triple-down pick today.
