Biden takes executive action on abortion

• President Joe Biden signed an executive order to protect access to reproductive health care services on Friday — two weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. [CNN / Kate Sullivan]
• The executive order directs Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to safeguard access to abortion medication, emergency medical care, and contraception, and to report to the president on his progress in 30 days. [New York Times / Michael D. Schear and Sheryl Gay Stolberg]

Japan’s former leader Shinzo Abe, 67, is assassinated

• Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, was assassinated Friday during a campaign event. [AP / Mari Yamaguchi, Chisato Tanaka, and Foster Klug]

• The suspected gunman shot Abe, 67, from behind. Security officers tackled and arrested the suspect, who reportedly used a handmade weapon. [NPR / Catie Dull]
