President Joe Biden hails Senate deal as ‘most significant’ US climate legislation ever.
The Guardian (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 80% • 5 min read

The deal, struck between the majority leader, Chuck Schumer, and longtime holdout Sen. Joe Manchin [a Democrat], would invest $369bn over the decade in climate change-fighting strategies including tax rebates for consumers to buy electric vehicles. The package would cut US emissions 40% by 2030, Schumer’s office said.
    ...
At Manchin’s insistence, $306bn is earmarked for debt reduction. Manchin, who aimed to preserve federal oil and gas leasing projects during months of talks, said the bill will invest in hydrogen, nuclear power, renewables, fossil fuels and energy storage. “This bill does not arbitrarily shut off our abundant fossil fuels," [Manchin said].
    ...
Another component of the package would allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, saving the federal government $288bn over the 10-year budget window. Democrats hope to pass the bill by a simple majority in the Senate. It remains unclear whether Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema will vote in favor.

Is raising interest rates to stop inflation worth the risk of higher unemployment?

390 votes, 39 comments

Context: Federal Reserve raises interest rates again, more increases expected.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - There is no other short-term mechanism available to throttle poverty-inducing inflation other than to reduce demand by raising interest rates (the cost of money), which will increase unemployment until inflation subsides. Longer term, there are a number of very meaningful steps that can be taken by legislators to reduce future inflationary pressures.

No - Current inflation is primarily due to supply chains and boardroom decisions. The previous rate increases have done little to impact inflation so far, and while raising th...
