Why the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago

• Friday, the Department of Justice released the affidavit which led to the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. [Vox / Ryan McCarthy]
• The affidavit says Trump took 184 classified documents to his Florida home when he left the White House, including 25 containing sensitive details about how the US gathers foreign intelligence. [Washington Post / Devlin Barrett and Perry Stein]
• After months of trying to obtain the documents from Trump’s team, the FBI said it had to conduct the search because it had evidence of obstruction and improper storage of classified material. [CNN / Marshall Cohen, Tierney Sneed, and Jeremy Herb]

UK energy costs to soar by 80 percent

• The price cap on UK household energy bills will rise by 80 percent in October as Britons face a worsening cost of living crisis. [CNBC / Jenni Reid]
• That means the typical cost of electricity and natural gas for an average household could almost double to roughly $4,200 per year, up from $2,300. [NYT / Mark Landler and Stanley Reed]
• UK energy prices soared following the invasion of Ukraine, which reduced the Russian gas supply and drove up costs. The UK is more dependent on gas flow than its European neighbors because it has less nuclear and renewable energy available. [AP / Sylvia Hui]
• Amid widespread calls for relief, candidates for UK prime minister Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak promised to help support families but offered few details on how. [BBC]

• Spain passed an “only yes means yes” consent law amid public outcry over how lack of active consent was treated in past sexual assault cases. [Guardian / Stephen Burgen]
• The US Secret Service announced it has recovered $286 million in pandemic loans stolen by fraudsters. [NBC News / Julia Ainsley and Sarah Fitzpatrick]
• This month, paleontologists from Portugal and Spain dug up a garden and unearthed what could be the largest dinosaur skeleton ever found in Europe. [BBC / Alex Binley]
