Tim Ferriss - 5-Bullet Friday — September 2, 2022

Hi All!
Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward this along to friends.
Podcast episode I’m listening to
“Off Course” from This American Life. This was just what I needed this week, as my life has taken an unexpected turn. Here’s the episode description: “Three people, and one animal, who know the path their lives will take until, suddenly, they don’t.” My favorite story is the first with Yibin Li, which deeply moved me. Don’t be surprised if your eyes well up. Take 15–20 minutes and thank me later. Huge hat tip to Loni for the recommendation.
What I’m using once again for workouts
XPO Trainer. I love the XPO Trainer. Recommended to me by elite powerlifter Mark Bell (check his other gear here; our podcast together here), it is effectively a “prowler” with mechanical resistance. I was initially skeptical, but it’s been one of my favorite torture tools for years now. The harder you push, the harder it pushes back, and the wheels allow me to easily use this anywhere. Perhaps counterintuitively, it is much more difficult to use on asphalt than soft or loose surfaces, which suits my urban environment perfectly. No weight plates are required. The XPO is not made in high volume, and it’s a bit expensive, so here are a few alternatives that are most suitable for grass or sand. I use the 1.0 version of the XPO Trainer, but there are newer models available. Bonus: If you want to see a walk-through of Mark’s incredible gym, here’s a video we shot together that showcases his favorite toys. If you have a push sled, a few kettlebells, a jump rope, and a weighted rucksack, you can get in exceptional shape quickly.
Song and album I’m enjoying
“I Know What I Know” (YouTube, Spotify) by Paul Simon with General M.D. Shirinda and The Gaza Sisters. Graceland is one of my favorite albums of all time, and it has been for decades. If there is a better feel-good album with a wider range of musical talent and style, I don’t know what it is. And don’t just take my word for it: “Graceland became Simon’s most successful studio album and his highest-charting album in over a decade; it is estimated to have sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. It was lauded by critics, won the 1987 Grammy for Album of the Year, and is frequently cited as one of the best albums of all time.”
What I’m watching
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (Amazon, Apple TV, YouTube). This was repeatedly recommended to me by my friend Kevin Rose. It was particularly reassuring that Mister Rogers basically took the good TV playbook of the time and did the exact opposite, which helped lead to mega-success. Description: “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is a 2018 American documentary film directed by Morgan Neville about the life and guiding philosophy of Fred Rogers, the host and creator of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The trailer for the film debuted on what would have been Rogers’ 90th birthday, March 20, 2018. It received acclaim from critics and audiences and grossed more than $22 million, making it the highest-grossing biographical documentary ever produced.” (Wikipedia)
If you don’t have time for the entire movie, please watch this short clip of a young Fred Rogers speaking before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications. It’s absolutely mesmerizing.
Quote I’m pondering
“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
— From Coraline by Neil Gaiman
You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my short letter to a friend who wants to get in shape, my interview with the late strength coach Charles Poliquin, and my conversation with Pavel Tsatsouline, best known for popularizing the kettlebell in the West.
And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.
Have a wonderful weekend, all.
Much love to you and yours,
Tim
P.S. Deal of the Week — Eight Sleep’s Pod Cover, a sleeping solution for dynamic cooling and heating.
Good sleep is one of the keys to unlocking your maximum potential. More than 30% of Americans struggle with sleep, and I’m a member of that sad group. Temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep, and heat is my nemesis. I’ve suffered for decades, tossing and turning, throwing blankets off, pulling them back on, and repeating ad nauseam. Now, there’s a simple way to sleep at the perfect temperature, and it’s a device I use myself—the Pod Cover by Eight Sleep. It pairs dynamic cooling and heating with biometric tracking to offer the most advanced (and user-friendly) solution on the market. I’ve been using it for more than a year. Add the Pod Cover to your current mattress and start sleeping as cool as 55°F or as hot as 110°F. It also splits your bed in half, so your partner can choose a totally different temp. The technology adjusts the temperature of each side of the bed based on your sleep stages, biometrics, and bedroom temperature, reacting intelligently to create the optimal sleeping environment. Eight Sleep is giving subscribers to 5-Bullet Friday $350 off(!) of the Pod Cover. This very special offer is valid until 11:59 PM ET on this September 11th. Click here to claim this deal and unlock your full potential through optimal sleep.
