Vox Sentences - Midterm elections are in 63 days

Midterm elections are just 63 days away. Against a backdrop of historic inflation, abortion rights that have been stripped away, some members of the GOP using the raid on Mar-a-Lago to sow mistrust in institutions, and election deniers running for office, they promise to be chaotic.

In the coming months, our politics team will focus on the areas below to help people understand the context surrounding this midterm election. This is the work that your gift supports:

• The future of American democracy: Politicians who supported overturning the election results in 2020 are running for crucial swing-state offices in 2022. We will continue to report on these races and what they mean for voting rights, how they could impact the next elections in their states, and what it would mean for our democracy if they succeed.
  
  
• Abortion politics after Roe: The Supreme Court’s decision this summer to end the right to an abortion was a watershed moment for the 2022 election as well as for reproductive rights. What can Democrats do to restore rights, and what are Republicans planning after their major victory? We will continue coverage of the politics and the real-life impacts of the decision. 
  
  
• The future of the climate: President Joe Biden just signed the Inflation Reduction Act, a massive investment in the fight against climate change. Do the administration’s efforts stop there, and how will voters respond to the new policies? Will the US accelerate a clean energy transition, or will we double down on fossil fuels? 
  
  
• The functionality of American government: President Biden has had a difficult time pursuing his agenda with Democrats in control of Congress — but if Republicans retake one or both chambers, things will surely become even more fraught. We will use all our expertise on institutions to report: can the US government function when it’s divided?
