Hear that rustle? That’s the sound of ten dozen (at least) editors, buyers, and influencers prepping their wardrobes and pulling samples for New York Fashion Week, which finally starts in just a few days. The sartorial set’s “back to school” ritual is always up against the finicky elements of September, but whether or not the weather allows us to showcase some of our favorite fall fashion pieces, the looks on and off the runway are sure to dazzle.

At a time when many people could use a little eye candy, it’s also an ideal opportunity to take stock of your own closet and see which essential pieces you’ll need to round out some of those flashier impulse purchases you bought while late-night scrolling (it happens to all of us). Whether that’s slouchy denim, thin knits, leather trousers, or a new statement bag, the arrival of fall and NYFW means that although the days may be getting cooler, the fashion inspiration is just heating up.
