Biden Cites The Lever: “Someone Tipped Off Some Of You Reporters”

In a speech pushing a bill to end dark money, Biden just cited The Lever’s groundbreaking reporting on a right-wing oligarch’s secret $1.6 billion donation.

Friends:

President Biden this morning just cited The Lever’s investigative reporting in his big speech demanding passage of legislation to end dark money — and now the Senate is set to vote on it.

Here’s what Biden said:

"A conservative activist who spent decades working to put enough conservative justices on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade now has access to $1.6 billion in dark money to do more damage and from our perspective restrict more freedoms… That is one of the biggest dark money transfers in history. And here’s the deal: The public only found out about this $1.6 billion transfer because someone tipped off some of you reporters, otherwise we still wouldn’t know about it. But now we know and there’s something we can do about it. This week the Senate is going to vote on the DISCLOSE Act."

We are those reporters. Biden is referencing our investigative reporting in partnership with ProPublica.

Clearly, our small team is making a huge impact. But we can’t stop now because corporate media will never continually expose this corruption.

The Lever is the opposite of corporate media we are reader-supported, which means we need you to use this special discount right now to help us expand our reporting.

When you become a subscriber, you get access to all sorts of exclusive stuff — live events, podcasts, and other subscriber-only features including our new e-book on the Supreme Court legalizing corruption. As important, you directly fund our follow-the-money reporting that holds politicians accountable.

In this case, you see one of the results: Our reporting on this massive secret donation and conservative network (which you can see here, here, here, here, here, and here) has finally compelled the White House to use its power to try to pass landmark legislation to end dark money. The DISCLOSE Act to end dark money had been sitting dormant in Congress, but after our reporting generated a media and political firestorm, Democrats are putting it to a Senate vote.

We’re right now aiming to hire more reporters to continue this work that uncovers secret money and pressures politicians to act. But we cannot do it without your help.
I hope you’ll consider clicking below to join our team and help us do more.

Rock the boat,

Sirota

P.S. Please forward this email to as many of your friends as you can — to spread the word about what we’re doing and about the big vote coming up in the Senate.
