MIDDI - On the Move
In search of the finer things in life — because the finest ones still cost too much.I can’t say moving is something I enjoy, but after setting up more than 10 homes in as many years, I can say I’ve gotten pretty good at it. Never knowing how long we’ll be staying, I nest quickly and get attached to my spaces just as fast. Moving takes as much careful planning as it does creativity, especially when you have limited room, lack of storage options or a funky layout to contend with. But no matter where you’re living or for how long, one thing remains the same: You want it to feel like home. And for me, that means having a place for everything and everything in its place. The three buys in this week’s edition have helped me make the most of homes of all sizes, protecting my things as much as my sanity. They’ll pull your home together in no time so you can start enjoying your space. Because home is where the heart (and all your stuff) is. 1. The Home Edit & iDesign Expanding Drawer Organiser (£20) Our new flat is missing one very important component: bathroom storage. This means I’ll be turning the chest of drawers in our bedroom into a dressing table. To avoid it looking too cluttered, I took inspiration from another room in our home—the kitchen—and ordered some drawer organizers to help me tuck everything away. This set from organizing queens Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit, can help you separate creams and serums from eyeshadows, lipsticks and more. Best of all, acrylic containers like this are easy to clean if anything leaks. 2. Amazon Basics Slim Velvet Non-Slip Suit Hangers (£11.59 for 30) Three apartments ago, I decided I wanted to replace all of our hangers with matching ones. Being very type A, the hodgepodge of mismatched plastic and wire hangers we were using was driving me crazy. And while ordering that many hangers at once made me feel equally nuts, once I saw how much space these slim, velvet hangers freed up in our closet, I knew they were worth every cent. This same set has now moved with us from Michigan to New York and now to London. You can add matching clips for hanging up your skirts and shorts. 3. Joseph Joseph Nest™ 9 Plus Bowl Set (£60) Whether you love to cook or are just starting, it doesn’t take long to figure out kitchen gear takes up a lot of space. Our first London flat had a tiny kitchen, which led me to swap out my old set of mixing bowls and collection of mismatched measuring cups for this set from Joseph Joseph, the home goods brand launched in 2003 by twin brothers Antony and Richard Joseph. All of the components—large mixing bowl, colander, sieve and measuring cups—stack neatly and clean easily. The ombre effect of this set also means you won’t mind if it lives on an open shelf for guests to see. Something to think about … Rentals can be a drag. This book by Joanna Thornhill has helped me customize our homes without the fear of losing our entire security deposit. It’s full of budget-conscious tips for organizing and decorating your rental apartment or house. Last week on MIDDI … MIDDI is a weekly roundup of mid-priced beauty, fashion and home buys released every Monday. Have a product you’re searching for? Leave your suggestions in the comments. |
