President Biden announces sale of 15 million barrels of reserve oil.
NBC News (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 74% • 3 min read

Biden said the Department of Energy would sell the remaining 15 million barrels of the 180 million barrels authorized for sale in March — a move that the president argued would help drive down the price of gas. Biden said his administration would adopt a plan that would allow it to “move quickly” to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in the future.
    ...
The U.S. uses about 20 million barrels of oil a day, and many analysts say that the sale of an additional 15 million barrels from the oil reserve is unlikely to have much of an effect on gas prices. “My message to oil companies is this: You’re sitting on record profits and we’re giving you more certainty so you can act now to increase oil production,” Biden said.
    ...
This time last year, the [reserve] had 620 million barrels of crude oil, enough to supply all U.S. consumption needs for one month. There are now about 400 million barrels left [the lowest level since 1984]. Biden acknowledged that the reserve's resources have been drained and said his administration would purchase crude to refill it once prices fall to $70 a barrel.

Should scientists research Covid-19 by creating new versions of it?

359 votes, 34 comments

Context: Recent research by Boston University involved creating a new version of Covid-19.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I believe the scientists mean well and there may even be valuable findings to come of this research. However, even the most secure labs have had viruses leak out in the past. We already have effective vaccines and know much more about Covid in general than we did 3 years ago, the thing would have to mutate far beyond anything we've seen for it to become such a threat again at this point. So to risk making a more fatal or infectious version that could escape and become dominant when we already have reliable solutions seems unnecessary.
