The Weekly Top 10

Notable Risers: The Midnight Club (Netflix), Love Is Blind (Netflix)

Notable Fallers: The Rings of Power (Prime), She-Hulk (Disney+)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

House of the Dragon once again bends the knee to Andor as the immaculate Star Wars drama holds first place on our Top 10 list for the second consecutive week. Additionally, a pair of Hulu comedies—Atlanta and Abbott Elementary—continue to climb the charts (now at no. 3 and no. 4, respectively) with consistently strong week-to-week outputs. It’s a good time for shows that start with the letter ‘A’: Andor, Atlanta, and Abbott Elementary currently occupy three of the first four spots on our weekly Top 10 and have not only had incredible staying power, but have also retained a significant amount of buzz since their releases.

The Rings of Power and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are noticeably absent after their impressive first seasons came to an end. Both shows stayed in our Top 10 for the entirety of their seasons. We bid them adieu and look forward to their returns. It’s also important to note that Netflix is suddenly dominating the charts and taking up half of our weekly list. It wasn’t so long ago that it felt like there wasn’t much to watch on Netflix—now it’s back with everything from light-hearted reality TV fare to thrilling horror.

Newcomers to watch: The Watcher (Netflix), Interview With the Vampire (Prime).

The Ringer-Verse Recommends
This week, the Ringer-Verse crew highlighted five must-watch, nerd-culture picks to stream right now.

If you’re looking for a new fantasy show to start and you somehow missed the most expensive one ever made, it’s a perfect time to binge The Rings of Power now that the entire season is out on Prime Video.

Maybe you need a quick Marvel fix? The TV special Werewolf by Night is now streaming on Disney+, and good news: You don’t have to be fully caught up with the rest of the MCU to enjoy it (Werewolf’s running time comes in at a brisk 52 minutes).

Want a new anime to obsess over? Look no further than Chainsaw Man, a brand-new adaptation from MAPPA, the increasingly dominant animation studio known for other blockbuster anime series like Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen, that’s now streaming on Hulu.

Note: To find out more information on the Ringer-Verse picks, scroll down just past the Top 10 and click the tab for “The Ringer-Verse Recommends.”

Movies

Movie of the Week: Pineapple Express

Watch along with Craig Horlbeck, Danny Kelly, and Danny Heifetz as they take over The Rewatchables and revisit Pineapple Express. You don’t want to miss this episode because if you do it’s pretty much like killing a unicorn, with like, a bomb. The modern-day classic stoner comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is streaming on Netflix as we speak!

That said, Halloween is approaching, and we can’t fault you if you’re in the mood to watch something scary. Fear not! We would be remiss if we didn’t suggest at least a couple of scary movies to get your heart rate up: This week, we’re going with a couple of genre classics, The Shining (HBO Max) and The Ring (Paramount+). They’re the type of movie that you can rewatch again and again—they’re just that scary.

Streaming Wars

Spotlight: HBO Max & Amazon Prime

Last week saw the end of Prime’s The Rings of Power, and as this Sunday approaches so does the finale for HBO’s House of the Dragon. Both shows have had remarkably successful first seasons—Dragon averages close to 30 million viewers per week and Power earned 1.3 billion minutes in its first few days of release.

Without the two biggest series of the year, things are sure to change in regard to the ongoing Streaming Wars. Where does that leave Prime Video and HBO Max for the immediate future? Both Dragon and Power were essential in propelling HBO and Amazon to the top of our streaming rankings, and while both have been scoring really well as of late—especially HBO Max, which has yet to be removed from the top spot—a pretty notable shakeup is on the horizon.

Netflix is hitting its stride at the perfect time after simultaneously reporting a gain in subscribers for the first time in months and hosting a slew of buzzy, ongoing TV shows. Netflix trails HBO by less than one point on our rankings, and that’s before factoring in the upcoming loss of Dragon.

Elsewhere, Disney+ also looks primed to jump Amazon in the near future. Down just three points with half of Andor still left to air, consider the company a riser in the Streaming Wars.

In the wise words of the great Charles Holmes, it looks like the hierarchy of power in the streaming universe is about to change.
