Steve Bannon Sentenced

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon has been sentenced to four months in prison for criminal contempt of Congress, after refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol.

Bannon's sentencing is the first to come out of four people who were held in contempt for not complying with a Jan. 6 subpoena. Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro is scheduled to stand trial next month, while the Justice Department declined to charge two top Trump aides, Mark Meadows and Dan Scavino.  

Bannon, 68, who will remain free pending an appeal, was also fined $6,500. Bannon's lawyers had argued for probation, while prosecutors had argued for a six-month prison term. In imposing the sentence, the judge noted Bannon was following the advice of his lawyer. 

Separately, the House Jan. 6. committee officially sent a subpoena to former President Donald Trump, seeking documents related to his actions over the day's events by Nov. 4 and asking him to testify Nov. 14.
