The Academy of American Poets is pleased to announce that Marc Brown, author, illustrator, and creator of the popular Arthur book and PBS television series, will design the official poster for the April 2023 occasion of National Poetry Month. Brown was selected by Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, to design the poster as part of a new National Poetry Month collaboration between Scholastic and the Academy of American Poets. Each year, the Academy distributes the poster free-of-charge to 85,000+ schools, libraries, and bookstores nationwide for the literary celebration.

The poster design, which will feature excerpted lines of poetry by U. S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón, will be revealed in January 2023 when the Poets.org poster request line will also open.

Every National Poetry Month we present Dear Poet, a multimedia education project that invites young people in grades five through twelve to write letters in response to poems written and read by award-winning poets. Dear Poet 2023 will feature poets Richard Blanco, Mahogany L. Browne, Marilyn Chin, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Danez Smith.

The submission period for Dear Poet 2023 will open on January 9, 2023, and close on March 3, 2023. In April, a PDF booklet of select student and poet letters will be published on Poets.org. More information will be provided in next month’s newsletter.

November 24 is Thanksgiving. Browse poems about gratitude, food, and home with our selection of Thanksgiving poems for kids featuring poets such as Alberto Ríos, Marilyn Nelson, and Richard Blanco. Plan ahead and find lesson plans for Thanksgiving.
