Dear friend of Vox,

I want to draw your attention to a new section in our About us page called “What you can expect from Vox.” These words have been in our editorial strategy for a while now. Every reporter has read them. But we believe that each and every person who comes to Vox should also read them — and help hold us accountable.

So, here they are. Here’s what you can expect from Vox:

• Our audience is at the heart of what we do. We never lose sight of the fact that policy and major events impact real people’s lives and shape their opinions.
  
  
• We overdeliver. You should walk away from our journalism feeling like your curiosity has been satisfied and that you understand what you’ve read.
  
  
• We do the work. We do the research, read the bill, pick up the phone to call experts, and then synthesize that information for people in a way that is helpful.
  
  
• Our work is approachable. What you read, watch, or listen to on Vox should not be difficult to understand if you are not an expert.
  
  
• We explain why the moment matters. We provide the context you need to help you understand why something happened, why it’s consequential, and why you should care about it.
  
  
• We work with moral clarity. On issues with a clear moral valence, we won’t pretend both sides are equally valid. Vox journalists engage with all sides of a debate and different perspectives, but we’re not afraid to make a bold statement backed by expertise and reporting.
  
  
• We treat identity as central to our work. Identity-related topics touch every part of our culture and society, and should be addressed as such. Talking to a diverse array of sources and understanding a variety of perspectives is essential in delivering the right information.

Giving all Vox readers visibility into how we think about and approach our work is a priority for us. Over the next several months, we’ll be looking for ways to strengthen how we do this — especially as we gear up to cover the years leading up to the next presidential election in a way that, I hope, will challenge everyone to think about what’s next for democracy.
