Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Thanksgiving Travel Is More Expensive For Everyone

It doesn’t matter if you’re flying or driving to your Thanksgiving celebrations this week: That trip is going to be more expensive than usual. Travel demand is surging, and rising labor and fuel costs have made transportation much more expensive over the last year.

Thanksgiving week flight prices have jumped 30% from 2021. The average round-trip airfare from New York to Atlanta rings in at $347—and if you bought your ticket last-minute, you probably paid far more than that.

If you’re planning on driving, you might be encouraged to know that renting a car is cheaper now than it was last year. But, as always, there’s a catch: Those savings will be erased by steep prices at the gas pump.
