Below as Above” by Fred L. Joiner

“Being a poet inspires my work as a nurse in that it allows me to connect with my patients and their families in an additional way. Too often in healthcare, we can become distracted by the tasks necessary to deliver quality care. Being a poet enables me to not lose human connection, and to remember that I was placed in a position to serve and that is a privilege indeed.”

“The poem, after all, is a space for interrogation and scrutiny and in Diné, or the Navajo language, there’s a word for all this I think, and that’s Siihasin, which could mean reflection, meditation, growth, and this idea of taking a brave step forward.”

Jake Skeets is the author of Eyes Bottle Dark with a Mouthful of Flowers (Milkweed, 2019), which was selected by Kathy Fagan for the 2018 National Poetry Series and received the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. Read and listen to Skeets discuss the Poem-a-Day curatorial approach and more on Poets.org
