MegaMaker - Everyone everyone GPT3

hey, here's a few thoughts from today

GPT3 (and GPT chat) has definitely captured the imagination of the tech/startup community.

Jon (my business partner) got it to "write a sonnet about Transistor.fm podcast hosting, in the voice of Shakespeare:"

It's pretty good!

Don't get medical advice from GPT3

I'm seeing people use GPT3 as the new "WebMD":

Getting medical advice from GPT3 seems like a very bad idea.

Paraphrasing Ben Thompson (Stratechery):

"GPT is good at providing a confident answer, complete with supporting evidence and citations, that is also completely wrong."

He continues:

AI output is probabilistic: ChatGPT doesn’t have any internal record of right and wrong, but rather a statistical model about what bits of language go together under different contexts.

The GPT3 model wasn't designed to provide accurate medical advice. In the past, it has made "dangerous oversimplifications" when it comes to health. (Source)

Self-diagnosis is already a problem on the internet; I hope GPT doesn't make it worse.

Public healthcare is good for entrepreneurs

Here's a recent comment from Brian Casel on the Open Threads podcast:

For a lot of our friends in Canada and UK, it is easier for them to get into entrepreneurship than it is for an American today. This is mainly because of healthcare being tied to your employer in America (and still costing a ton of money). It's a huge blocker to entrepreneurship.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Canada's public healthcare. I don't think I would have started a business if we hadn't had it.

Whenever I talk to my founder/entrepreneur friends in the USA, healthcare coverage is one of their biggest stressors.

Mike McDerment, the founder of Freshbooks, says:

"Public healthcare is entrepreneurship-enabling. Not just for your staff, but also you (as the founder) to take the risk."

Over the years, I've seen many of my US-based solopreneur friends go back to paid employment, simply because they couldn’t get health insurance any other way.

This isn't to say that Canada's healthcare system is perfect (it's not). But for entrepreneurs, the peace of mind that comes from not having to get private health insurance is massive.

That's it for today.
