Humphrey studied classical and jazz flute in high school and college, and upon graduation moved to New York City to play professionally.¹ Within weeks she was signed to Blue Note Records, the first woman on the legendary label’s roster.² We’re first playing her 1971 debut, Flute-In, a straight ahead and uplifting jazz record featuring Idris Muhammad on drums and Lee Morgan on trumpet.
