Argentina Wins a Thriller
|
Argentina won the World Cup yesterday, the country's third title, outlasting defending champion France in penalty kicks in one of the most exciting finals in recent years. Argentine superstar Lionel Messi scored two goals in what he said will likely be his last World Cup appearance.
Argentina controlled much of the game, going up 2-0 with goals in the 23rd and 36th minutes by Messi and Ángel Di María. The score held until the 80th minute, when 23-year-old French star Kylian Mbappé scored, and then followed up with a stunning goal less than 90 seconds later (w/video).
The match went into extra time, with Messi again scoring in the 108th minute, and being countered by a Mbappé goal with just minutes left to play, sending the outcome to penalty kicks. Argentina won the round 4-2, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez stopping the second shot from France.

The House Jan. 6 Committee is set to hold its final public hearing today, with the panel expected to make referrals for a number of individuals they allege committed crimes during last January's storming of the US Capitol. The referrals are nonbinding and carry no legal weight but instead act as a recommendation from the panel to the Justice Department to take further action.
Reports Friday suggested the panel will vote on issuing a criminal referral for former President Donald Trump on three charges—conspiracy, fraud, and insurrection. The panel is also expected to consider charges for other individuals, yet to be identified as of this morning. Trump and allies have argued the roughly 18-month-long effort by the Democratic-led committee is politically motivated.
The panel will disband at the end of the current congressional session, which lasts through Jan. 2. Functionally, Special Counsel Jack Smith will determine whether to pursue charges. Livestream the hearing here (12:45 pm ET).

Robert Crimo Jr., the father of the gunman in the July 4 Highland Park, Illinois, shooting, was arrested after being charged with seven felony counts of reckless conduct Friday, one for each of the shooting victims. Each carries a maximum of three years in what legal observers have described as a rare case of a parent facing charges for their child's crimes.
The elder Crimo is a known businessman in the affluent north Chicago suburb of 30,000, having also run for mayor in 2019. He is accused of signing the then-19-year-old shooter's gun permit application in 2019 after reports that the son threatened violence against himself and others. His son, now 22, has pleaded not guilty to over 100 criminal counts after allegedly opening fire from a store rooftop on hundreds marching in the neighborhood Independence Day parade.
Previously, the father denied any wrongdoing, and was released on $50K bail Saturday. His next hearing is set for Jan. 12.

It's easy to forget that our body's sweat isn't just water. But why is it that we only down a glass of water after a long run? Our sweat consists of water and salt, so next time you're reaching for that glass of water ... remember to replenish electrolytes too.
And this time of year, the best form of salt is in a salted hot chocolate. LMNT—known for its delicious electrolyte blends—has released a chocolate medley. It's the ideal way to stay hydrated (with sodium, magnesium, potassium, and no sugar or artificial ingredients), while enjoying savory winter flavors like mint chocolate, chocolate caramel, or classic chocolate. We love making raspberry hot chocolates because LMNT doesn't need to be served cold to deliver the perfect electrolyte mix. This holiday season, turn to LMNT for a clean, chocolatey electrolyte boost to help you recover from an intense workout or long night.
Ready to hydrate your body the right way? Enjoy a FREE sample pack of eight flavors today with any purchase, plus a money-back satisfaction guarantee.
