Flow State - Penguin Cafe Orchestra
You’re on the free tier for Flow State. To support our work and receive our Tuesday podcast, become a subscriber: Good morning. Today we’re listening to Penguin Cafe Orchestra, a band formed by English guitarist Simon Jeffes. Born in Sussex in 1949, Jeffes was inspired early on by folk music and the minimalism of Philip Glass.¹ In the early ‘70s, Jeffes conceived of a sound that he would later characterize as “modern semi-acoustic chamber music.”² The humble hopefulness of Penguin Cafe Orchestra presaged artists decades on like Wes Anderson and Sufjan Stevens. We’re playing two of their albums: Broadcasting from Home from 1984 and their self-titled record from 1981. Jeffes passed away in 1997.
