Microsoft’s ‘multibillion dollar’ OpenAI investment comes with new level of secrecy

Microsoft is making a big new investment in OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse behind ChatGPT, extending a partnership that has the potential to reshape some of its biggest products.
  • The Redmond, Wash.-based company says its new investment in OpenAI is “a multiyear, multibillion dollar investment to accelerate AI breakthroughs to ensure these benefits are broadly shared with the world.” What the tech giant won't say is exactly how much it's investing, or for how long. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s earnings Tuesday should be especially revealing.

  • The results will put numbers to the growing sense of customer caution that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella conveyed in a memo last week announcing 10,000 job cuts. 

  • As one of the first big tech companies to report in this earnings cycle, Microsoft will be closely watched as a barometer of corporate tech spending. Read more.

The Washington state Supreme Court will hear arguments this week on whether a statewide tax on capital gains in excess of $250,000 is lawful.

  • The tax, approved by the legislature and signed by Gov. Jay Inslee two years ago, made waves in the tech industry since it targets stocks, which can be a key part of compensation for tech workers. Read more.


A hydrogen-powered airplane revved up for testing in Central Washington in another step toward climate-friendly, zero-emission air travel.
