What can the history of HBCUs tell us about the present?

Good morning, and thanks for your continued support of Extra Points.

This will be a bit of an unconventional newsletter, because I have some news I want to share with everybody first.

The episode below will be our last Going For Two podcast under our current format. Bryan and I have done close to 150 of these podcasts over the last two years, and while we have deeply enjoyed them, we also recognize that we both do a bunch of different jobs around the D1.ticker extended universe, and we're both already stretched a teensy bit too thin.

The previous format simply doesn't make business or logistical sense for us anymore. After this episode, we will, at a minimum, be taking an extended podcasting break.

But that doesn't mean that we're done with doing audio storytelling. We're considering a variety of potential other audio formats, from longer, interview-focused shows, to more frequent, but much shorter broadcasts. If you have a moment, we'd love your thoughts on what you'd like to see in the podcasting/audio department.

Our hope is that after we take some time to wrap up some other projects, we can revisit podcasting with Extra Points.

Here's today's show, which discusses why we're making this change, what I learned from writing Athletic Director Simulator 3000...and perhaps most importantly, a potential example of what future podcasts around here might look like.

This episode also includes a long interview with Dr. Derrick White, a professor of History and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky, and the author of one of my favorite college football history books, Blood, Sweat and Tears.

I wanted to talk to Dr. White to get a better historical understanding of the dustup between Ed Reed and Bethune-Cookman. I'll share some of his quotes and some context, after the jump:
