Ecologists Find Unexpected Feedback Loops Could Complicate Fighting Climate Change

It’s hard to escape the reality that the world is not doing well in responding to climate change.

According to the most recent United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, global surface temperatures will all but inevitably soar past the 1.5 degrees Celsius mark set as a target limit by the Paris Accords, and possibly breach the 2 degrees Celsius mark by the middle of the century.

And that’s just the scenario as extrapolated in a more or less linear fashion from current trends in temperature and carbon dioxide emission levels. As described in a new paper published Friday in the journal One Earth, climate change could get a lot weirder due to unexpected feedback loops that scientists can’t fully model.

A Coolant Leak Stranded Three Astronauts in Space — and a New One Has Just Appeared

Members of the spaceflight community are puzzled by Russia’s second case of coolant leak at the International Space Station in two months.

The newest instance appeared last week, when the Russian cargo ship Progress 82 lost coolant. NASA says astronauts were “in no danger.” But the anomaly garnered attention: a coolant leak just two months ago on December 14, 2022 left two Russian cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut stranded.

‘Quantumania’ Proves that Marvel Has a Young Avengers Problem

It’s no question that Marvel is at a crossroads. Since dissolving the original Avengers team in Avengers: Endgame with the end of the Infinity Saga, Marvel’s Phase Four has been about rebuilding from the ruins of the Blip and setting the stage for the next generation of heroes.

Phase Four, which came to an end with 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has been scattered at best, haphazard at worst. Over the course of the Phase’s seven movies and however many Disney+ shows, the MCU has managed to create a vision of its rapidly expanding universe that basically amounts to one big question mark. Where is this going? Who are our new heroes? What will happen to the old ones? And why should we care about Kang?

Insect Bites Reveal the Origins of an Elusive Plant Behavior

Two-hundred-fifty million years ago, an insect got hungry for a midnight snack. It chewed through the wide leaf of a now-extinct gigantopterid plant, sowing rows of rounded punctures.

The holes were so prominent that they’re still visible in the fossilized leaf today. But it isn’t the size or shape of the insect bites that intrigues researchers. Rather, it’s how the bites are arranged — in two symmetrical rows on either side of the leaf’s center.
