California vs. Walgreens

The Story

California is breaking up with Walgreens.

What’s happening?

Earlier this year, the FDA gave pharmacies the 'OK' to dispense abortion pills to patients with prescriptions in states where it’s legal. Walgreens and CVS were on board with the plan...until last week. Walgreens — the country’s second-largest pharmacy chain — announced it won’t be selling the abortion pill, mifepristone, in 20 states. It comes after the Republican attorneys general in those states threatened to take legal action against pharmacies that provide the pill. Currently, Walgreens does not dispense the abortion pill in any state. However, it plans to distribute the pills based on “where it is legal and operationally feasible.” The company's stance has California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) saying, 'Walgreens just lost a big customer.'

Explain.

Yesterday, Newsom announced the state will no longer work with Walgreens. He reportedly ordered the California Department of Health and Human Services to review all ties between the state and the company, including with the state’s two largest public insurance plans. Nearly 14 million low-income Californians — about one-third of the state’s population — are on the public plan Medi-Cal alone. But it's unclear how much business those public insurance plans do with Walgreens. Newsom said that the state won’t do business with Walgreens or “any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women's lives at risk.” Meanwhile, Rite Aid and CVS haven’t announced a change in their policies yet.

Medication abortions account for more than half of abortions in the US. Now, following the overturn of Roe v. Wade, abortion pills have become a focal point for abortion rights supporters and anti-abortion advocates. Only time will tell how long a decades-old drug remains accessible to 40 million women nationwide.

And Also...This

What's making some edits...

The Department of Agriculture. Yesterday, the Biden admin proposed changing the requirements for “Product of USA" labels on meat, eggs, or poultry. Under the current definition, products from animals born and raised abroad can be labeled as “Made in the USA,” as long as they're processed in the US. Ranchers have been lobbying to change that rule, arguing the labels are misleading. Case in point: 63% of customers thought the labels meant the entire production process took place in the US. Now, eggs, meat, and poultry products can only get the sticker, if the animal is "born, raised, slaughtered, and processed" in the US. Cattle organizations said “consumers have the right to know where their food comes from.” Others want to do away with the labels entirely, since they're optional to begin with. The rule will reportedly be final after a 60-day comment period.

Who people want back safely...

Four Americans. Yesterday, US officials confirmed that gunmen in Mexico kidnapped four American citizens. Last week, the group drove into Tamaulipas — a Mexican state directly south of Texas — to reportedly buy medicine. They were caught in a shootout before the gunmen reportedly “herded” them into another car and fled the scene. One Mexican citizen died during the attack. The State Dept currently has a travel warning for Tamaulipas because of kidnappings and other crimes. Now, the FBI is offering $50,000 for the Americans’ return and arrest of the gunmen. Mexican and US officials said they hope to find the Americans soon. President Biden has been briefed on the situation.

Where people are mourning…

Rochester, NY. Yesterday, a second person died from injuries following GloRilla's concert on Sunday. Officials said people reported hearing gunshots inside the venue and tried to run to the exits — causing the crowd to surge. Now, officials say they don’t have any evidence of gunshots being fired or stabbings. They are investigating what caused the incident and who is responsible.
