Flow State - Wayne Shorter
You’re on the free tier of Flow State. To get our weekly Tuesday podcast and access to our full archives (including daily Spotify playlist), become a subscriber: Good morning. Today we’re listening to Wayne Shorter, an American saxophonist from Newark, NJ. Born in 1933, Shorter attended the pioneering Newark Arts High School and switched from clarinet to sax before heading to New York University.¹ In the ‘60s he joined Miles Davis’s second quintet along with Herbie Hancock on piano and Tony Williams on drums, contributing heavily to that group’s legendary experimentalism.² He went on to co-lead Weather Report. We’re playing The Classic Blue Note Recordings, a 2011 compilation of tracks from Shorter’s time with Blue Note Records in the ‘60s and ‘70s. On the first disc, Shorter leads the bands; on the second, he accompanies. Shorter passed away last week at age 89.
