Request your free copy of the official poster in time for the April 2023 celebration of National Poetry Month.

The 2023 poster was designed by Marc Brown, creator of the popular Arthur book and PBS television series. The artwork incorporates an excerpted line from the poem “The Carrying” by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón. Brown was selected by Scholastic—the global children’s publishing, education, and media company.
On April 27, people across North America will carry poems to share with others throughout the day. Learn more about how to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day in schools, bookstores, libraries, public spaces, and on Twitter with #PocketPoem.

From March through May 2023 the Poetry Coalition, an alliance of more than twenty-five independent poetry organizations across the United States, will explore the theme “and so much lost      you’d think / beauty had left a lesson: Poetry & Grief” in a series of virtual and in-person programs. The line “and so much lost      you’d think / beauty had left a lesson” is from Ed Roberson’s poem “once the magnolia has blossomed.”

Hosted by Kentucky Poet Laureate, Crystal Wilkinson, Words for the People features an established writer and an emerging writer sharing their wisdom to help you free your own story.

The accompanying seven-unit lesson plan is designed to explore the theme of each corresponding episode and help you and your students “free the words that matter.” Students will listen, note-take, analyze words and ideas, and apply their thinking to a writing task in each lesson.
Teachers, thank you for your work bringing poetry into the classroom year-round. We’re happy to be able to offer hundreds of free lesson plans, essays, and other resources, and we’re grateful for the chance to work with you.
