Regulators close Silicon Valley Bank in stunning downfall for financial mainstay of tech industry

The rapid collapse of Silicon Valley Bank culminated Friday with news that the California Department of Financial Protection shut down the 40-year-old firm and turned it over to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
  • The downfall of SVB is being called the largest bank failure since the Great Recession. It has huge repercussions for tech startups and investors in Seattle and beyond that use SVB to store cash and raise venture debt. Seattle-area founders told GeekWire they’ve used SVB since starting their companies. Read more

Biotech giant Moderna will open an office in Seattle to tap into the city’s tech talent pool, with plans to hire up to 220 workers.

  • The Cambridge, Mass.-based company aims to open the office April 4, with a focus on artificial intelligence, cloud-based tools, and other technology applications. Read more.

Seattle startup Latchel, a platform to manage single-family rental properties, raised funding from security hardware giant Allegion.

  • The company sells software to landlords and property management firms, letting users facilitate tenant requests, invoice service providers and offer renters insurance. Read more.

The suspect in the alleged stabbing of a fellow Microsoft employee near the company’s Redmond, Wash., campus pleaded not guilty to attempted second-degree murder.

  • A 27-year-old engineer who joined the tech giant last year is accused of the unprovoked attack. His writings in an online “life journal” are drawing attention. Read more.
