There may be no wardrobe staple more essential than a crisp, clean white shirt. But it’s also most susceptible to life’s everyday accidents: coffee spills in the morning, red wine dribbles in the evening, and the chaos that is biting into a hot dog covered in condiments.

By the end of the day, what was once an outfit you wore with pride can quickly turn into something of a crime scene. Could there possibly be a white shirt that could survive it all?

To investigate, we tested three purportedly stain-repellent shirts. None of them promise to be completely stain proof—but we did want to see if they measured up to their marketing claims. So we promptly doused them in coffee, red wine, sriracha, and more.
