😀 Hiring new Product Managers (+ how to get a new job)

Hiring the right product people

While this may seem an odd time to share resources about hiring product people, as a product leader, you’ll likely need to hire a Product Manager soon. And since you may not have as many open positions, you need to be intentional about the Product Managers you hire. If you’re a Product Manager looking for your next role, these resources may give you an idea of what hiring managers are most likely looking for.

Top 10 elements to consider when hiring for Product Managers at a startup. Evaluating product managers for a startup is much more difficult than evaluating software engineers. You can’t just give a coding test and wait for the results. Evaluating resumes for a product manager role at the beginning of the process is similarly more difficult. Based on their experience hiring hundreds of Product Managers for top tier startups, the team at Rocket shared the top 10 attributes to keep in mind when sourcing product managers for startups.

If your team works with a large code base, or you’re in charge of a new product that you didn’t build from scratch, your team may find Bloop useful. This tool gives your engineers the ability to ask their code base questions using natural language, which should help speed up code archeology. For example, your team can ask Bloop questions such as “What is our current approach to GitHub auth?” and get an answer back along with sample code from your codebase.

Have you noticed a change in Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides lately? You’re not imagining things. Google Workspace is implementing a new UI that promises to streamline core collaboration journeys across Google apps. Some changes include a simplified user interface at the top of docs, sheets and slides helping you find frequently used actions faster.

While it’s true that if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice, most times you need to make an explicit decision. If your product team finds that difficult, check out mombo. This collaborative decision-making platform lets you can set parameters for a decision, get inputs from your team, analyze, decide and share out your results.

Organizations have long searched for an effective way to capture all the knowledge that their teams produce while building products. Up till now, every solution required a herculean effort to track down, catalog, organize and index that information. DataQA promises to make that part of knowledge management a much easier lift. The Slack-native knowledge management app helps your product team bookmark, tag and save information inside Slack, making it much more accessible for reference later.

Luck of the Irish

Today is the day that most people hope to have a little “Luck of the Irish” on their side – as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And so, it’s fitting the Product Collective team will be flying to Dublin, Ireland. We’ll actually land in Dublin on Saturday, so there aren’t any festive celebrations planned. But we’re excited to be there to put on the European edition of INDUSTRY: The Product Conference in Dublin next week.

As I get ready to head to the airport, I’m reminded of the very last time I was in Ireland – as we put on INDUSTRY Europe on March 9-11, 2020. As you can imagine, our stress levels were on overdrive and we weren’t even sure if we’d be able to put on the show that we worked so hard to organize. It turns out that we were able to, but just barely. Minutes after our conference ended, the government in Ireland banned all mass events. The same thing happened nearly everywhere else in the world.

Thankfully, things are much different today. I’m feeling some anxiety, but it’s the normal kind of anxiety that I always get before we put on our conferences. I just want to make sure that everybody has an amazing experience.

So on this St. Patrick’s Day, I’m hoping that I can get some of that “Luck of the Irish” to make sure that all goes smoothly next week. If you get any extra luck today, please pass some my way. I promise to return the favor any time you need. Deal?

9 Skills you need to test when hiring a Product Manager. Finding the right product manager for your team isn’t always straightforward. It’s difficult to quantify many of the skills that make product managers successful on a resume. As a result, you need to test for the strategic thinking, hard skills, and communication skills that a product manager must have to perform well. As you think about growing your product management team, Emily Heaslip described some important capabilities to look for when you hire, as well as the tools and techniques that can help you verify these skills.

Five ways to make sure you hire the right Product Manager for the job. Given the wide range of responsibilities the Product Manager role can encompass, hiring one can sometimes seem like guesswork. As a chief product officer, Jennifer Huang Gil has seen the hiring challenges (and failures) caused by a lack of clarity around the role. But over 10 years of interviewing across different companies and industries, she has identified some practices to ensure you find the best fit. Here are Jennifer’s top five tips for hiring the right PM for the job.

How to hire the right Product Manager for your IT needs. IT organizations are increasingly shifting from project-based organizational structures to product-based methodologies, which involve cross-functional teams. These new building blocks of business include both tech and business pros, and they’re led by a Product Manager. As a result, many corporate leaders who are used to hiring for IT now have to learn what makes a good product manager as they seek to fill these roles. Josh Fruhlinger spoke to a host of experts, including product managers and those who supervise, hire, and mentor them, about what you should look for if you’re hiring a new PM for your team.
