April 2023

This April, join us as we celebrate National Poetry Month, an occasion we launched to honor the integral role that poets and poetry have in our culture. We encourage you and your school communities to participate in National Poetry Month with this list of thirty ways to celebrate poetry in the classroom.

Share how your class is celebrating, and don’t forget to tag us on social media @poetsorg, or use the hashtag #NationalPoetryMonth.

As you plan for National Poetry Month, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Browse selections of poetry lesson plans curated around themes, occasions, class subjects, and more.

  • Find themed collections of poetry for teens and poetry for kids.

  • Learn more about the programs and events happening in celebration of National Poetry Month below:
Request your free copy of the official poster in time for the April 2023 celebration of National Poetry Month.

The 2023 poster was designed by Marc Brown, creator of the popular Arthur book and PBS television series. The artwork incorporates an excerpted line from the poem “The Carrying” by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón. Brown was selected by Scholastic—the global children’s publishing, education, and media company.
On April 27, people across North America will carry poems to share with others throughout the day. Learn more about how to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day in schools, bookstores, libraries, public spaces, and on Twitter with #PocketPoem.

April is National Arab American Heritage Month. Celebrate this month and year-round with a collection of poems for kids, featuring poets such as Kahlil GibranNaomi Shihab Nye, and others.

For National Poetry Month, browse lesson plans featuring ars poetica poems, including work by , , , and many other classic and contemporary poets.

From March through May 2023 the Poetry Coalition, an alliance of more than twenty-five independent poetry organizations across the United States, will explore the theme “and so much lost      you’d think / beauty had left a lesson: Poetry & Grief” in a series of virtual and in-person programs. The line “and so much lost      you’d think / beauty had left a lesson” is from Ed Roberson’s poem “once the magnolia has blossomed.”

Teach Roberson’s poem with this free lesson plan, and find essays on grief by renowned poets who reflect on poems that helped them better understand or process grief.

Congratulations to Education Ambassador of the Academy of American Poets, Richard Blanco, who received a National Humanities Medal for “powerful storytelling [that] challenges the boundaries of culture, gender, and class while celebrating the promise of our Nation’s highest ideals.” You can watch the ceremony, presented at the White House by President Joe Biden.
