Pushing back against office “truths”

We’re all on this journey together to build your wealth, and to build women’s wealth more broadly.

Because of this, IMO, it’s our responsibility at Ellevest to stand up for you on all-things-women-and-money, whenever and wherever we have the opportunity to do so.

And so, when I found myself at a CNBC dinner for CFOs, and when the conversation turned to return to the office, and when the point was made that returning to the office was key because “it’s important for our company’s culture” … well, your girl had a few thoughts to share on your behalf. I was compelled to make the point that those corporate cultures have worked for the people who were in that room with me — mostly white and mostly male — and not necessarily for everyone else. (“Would you like a side of micro-aggressions with your main course?”)

I also noted that the bet that some may be making — that the slowing economy will force people back into the office — may work in the short term. But it’s a long-term losing proposition, since it essentially bets against the US economy’s strength. And it’s this strength that in turn drives new businesses — and thus new (potentially more flexible) jobs.
