It seems New Yorkers are never short on opinions.

“If you ask three New Yorkers the best place to go for pizza, you’re gonna get three different answers,” Nancy Mammana, CMO of New York City’s official destination marketing organization, New York City Tourism + Conventions, said.

That’s why the org is leaning on the “opinion power” of the city’s residents to help drive its latest tourism push. As the world adjusts to the long-term realities of the pandemic, countries like China have recently loosened travel restrictions. The city wants to woo tourists back.

  • Its new social campaign, #WHATSGOODNYC, aims to do just that. New Yorkers can use the hashtag on social media to recommend destinations in the city to tourists.
  • A team of content creators will be sent to locations that were recommended using the hashtag to create social media posts showcasing the destinations, according to Mammana.
  • The agency has already worked with photographer Brittany Eliza Kunkel to capture springtime bloom in the city, while a post from pizza blogger Adam Kuban showcases “the most-New York sandwich”—a bacon, egg, and cheese—at The Late Show with David Letterman-famous Hello Deli.

“The best experience you could have in New York City is when locals intersect with visitors,” Mammana said.

PRIVACY

What’s it all mean?

Europe’s most consequential consumer privacy law is old enough to read.

Passed in 2016, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was shortly followed by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), America’s first state-level consumer privacy law, which passed in 2018.

Though privacy legislation may feel like an inevitable rising tide of anxiety and even confusion, at least among advertisers, UC Berkeley’s Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity has released a collection and analysis of reports and studies that have probed into the two laws.

While the research doesn’t give a true nickels-and-cents account of the legislation’s economic impact on digital advertising, it does provide detailed anecdotes about the impacts of these laws, which the white paper calls “ultimately ‘first drafts’ in privacy protection,” on companies.

Read highlights from the research here.—RB

World Cup countdown

On the heels of a record-breaking Women’s March Madness and with a few months to go until the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, it should come as no surprise that some brands are turning their attention to women’s soccer.

Visa, for one, acknowledged the 100-day countdown mark by adding 33 women’s soccer players to its Team Visa program, which has sponsored more than 500 athletes from around the world since 2000—54% of them being women, Andrea Fairchild, SVP and head of sponsorships at Visa, told Marketing Brew.

The roster: Three women on the new lineup are professional soccer players in the US: Mallory Swanson, Sam Mewis, and Catarina Macario.

  • As part of the program, Visa, an official partner of FIFA women’s soccer, provides its athletes with benefits like mental health resources, financial literacy training, business development opportunities, and support for philanthropic efforts they might be engaged in, according to Fairchild. They’re selected for their athletic achievements and “display of shared values,” she said.
  • “We don’t just look for the star players,” Fairchild told Marketing Brew. “We want to make sure that these individuals are creating impact, and they’re really determined to leave the game better than they found it.”

METRICS AND MEDIA

Stat: Last month, the Wall Street Journal experienced “a nearly 300% YoY increase in campaign volume from regional banks looking to reassure the business community of their reliability” in the wake of SVB’s collapse, a Dow Jones executive told Adweek.

Quote: “The Great Resignation is over. You see it in the layoffs that the tech industry’s doing and some other areas. So we believe that we’ll be just fine. Naturally, there’ll be individual cases where people won’t want to come back and they’ll seek other alternatives, but in the scheme of things it is not going to be significant.”—Omnicom CEO John Wren speaking to investors during its Q1 earnings call

Tagline: “Airitage.” Aeromexico appears to be targeting the Mexican diaspora with a play on the word heritage, spotted by Michael J. Miraflor, chief brand officer at Hannah Grey VC.
