Toronto Gold Theft

Canadian authorities announced they are investigating the theft of about $15M in gold and valuables that were stolen from a holding cargo facility at the Toronto Pearson International Airport this week. No suspects have been identified as of Friday.

The gold and valuables were transferred to the facility after being taken off a plane Monday evening. Authorities said the thieves accessed the public side of a warehouse that is leased to a third party outside the airport's security to get to the loot. They also said nothing unusual about the handling of the shipment was noticed until the gold and valuables disappeared from the warehouse. The theft joins a list of other major heists in Canada in the last two decades, which include the 2011 and 2012 thefts of roughly 3,000 tons of maple syrup valued at $14.4M, which were stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.

Twitter drops "state-affiliated" and "government-funded" labels for media.

The update comes about a week after NPR announced it would stop posting content on Twitter after Twitter designated the media outlet as “state-affiliated media.” The social network also removed labels identifying the personal and official accounts of US officials as government officials.

NFL suspends five players for violating gambling policy.

The league suspended four Detroit Lions players—receivers Jameson Williams, Quintez Cephus, Stanley Berryhill, and safety CJ Moore—as well as Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney. The NFL bans all betting on NFL games.

Study finds worms get the munchies from cannabis-like substances.

The C. elegans nematode worm is driven to consume higher quantities of high-calorie bacterial foods when their cannabinoid receptors are activated, paralleling the effects of marijuana on human appetites.
