Dudes For Your Feet

Hey Dude, a shoe startup, was recently acquired by Crocs for $2.5 billion. Under the Crocs empire, the startup plans to open a new 730,000 sq ft distribution center in Las Vegas.

What is Hey Dude?

Most of you must be wondering what company is this even?

Despite not being a household name, Hey Dude has a loyal following, particularly among young people. In a biannual survey of US teens, Hey Dude ranked among the top 10 favorite shoe brands for the second year in a row, making it a perfect complement to the original Crocs line-up. Crocs are already a favorite of Gen Zers, with a 60% approval rating, which is 13% higher than the millennial market rate, according to Morning Consult.

White-Collar Wipeout

Almost 80% of Americans have dealt with burnout at work.

On the bright side, if you’re overwork and burnout led to you saving up a lot of money, you can throw it at the problem.

Fancy-pants burnout retreats are getting more popular these days. These rehab-like programs are popping up all over the world, and they're designed to treat stress. Bloomberg Businessweek did a whole story on it, so you know it's legit.

Istana is one such provider running burnout clinics in Bali, Barbados, and Ibiza. They've got all the usual stuff like therapy, massages, yoga, and meditation, but they also offer some pretty trippy options like psychedelic-assisted therapy, art therapy, and EMDR therapy

And if that's not enough, they've got a "reset retreat" in Mexico that's all about getting you back on track. You'll be doing transformational breathwork, crystal healing, and outdoor activities like surfing and horseback riding.

Istana’s founder says admission for burnout has risen 600% since March 2020, with many people seeking simultaneous treatment for PTSD, substance abuse, and depression.

But burnout therapy could burn a hole in your fancy boxers.

  • The cost of a low-budget getaway like those offered by The Retreat Company can range from $5k to $10k per week, according to Bloomberg.
  • The moderately expensive ones like Istana start between $30k to $55k/week.
  • And the royal sabbaticals at places like the The Swiss clinic Kusnacht Practice can cost $133,000/week.

There are emerging options too if you’re not that inbred — such as burnout sessions offered by UK-based celebrity trainer Harry Jameson. But they too can cost you around $300 for an hour.

Snitches Get Riches

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) just gave a whistleblower a crazy huge award of almost $279 million!

Why? Nobody knows. This person's information helped the SEC with their enforcement action, but the SEC hasn’t revealed what the case was about or which billion dollar giant was it affecting.

For the record, this award is way bigger than the last one they gave out in October 2020, which was $114 million. Gurbir Grewal, the director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement, said that this just shows how important whistleblowers are in the SECs mission.

Just so you know, the money for these awards comes out of an investor protection fund that was set up by Congress. If the sanctions that law violators pay are over $1 million, whistleblowers can get between 10% to 30% of the money collected.

Closing note: If you work at a giant corporate and have some juicy insider knowledge, snitching to the SEC might just make you a multi-millionaire.

DEI On Paper vs. Execution

Diversity roles in startups has become quite the talk these days. Companies are all about inclusivity and equality. At least that’s what they’re claiming to the media. While its easy to talk about plans for diversity hiring, there’s often a gap between companies’ DEI goals (on paper) and execution.

Blavity Inc. — the tech and media startup founded for Black millennials in 2014  — aims to help bridge the diversity gap in the tech industry. It’s doing this through two platforms:

AfroTech - the community for talented Black folks has been around for a while, and it has been fighting to change the narrative in the tech industry that Black folks “aren’t formally educated in technology”.

Talent Infusion - a hiring platform that provides year-round access for Black talent to various organizations. It’s a space specifically for companies to have direct connection with the talented people of color.

How it works
AfroTech solicits its community for resumes, vets potential candidates, and adds them to Talent Infusion where companies pay a subscription fee to access the resumes and then contact the talent.

Shorts ⏳
🤴 Royal Costs - The cost of King Charles’ coronation this weekend was about £50m-£100m ($63m-$125m). For reference, when Queen Elizabeth II took the throne in 1953, it cost an inflation-adjusted ~£50m.

🙆‍♂️ The Blue Boys - Twitter has already converted around 640,000 users into paying Twitter Blue subscribers. A lot of them received free subscriptions though.

🤖 The AI Scientist - A ‘remarkable’ AI tool designed mRNA vaccines that are more potent and stable

🤟 Finding Favorites - These are GenZ's favourite brands in fashion, media and what not, according to a research by Morning Consult.
