As a teenager growing up in Milwaukee, one of my favorite things to do was listen to the fiery speeches of Malcolm X. I used to buy cassette tapes of Malcolm’s speeches from a local Black-owned bookstore called Positive Image. I’d take the tapes into my basement recording studio and listen to them for hours on end. I mimicked Malcolm’s speeches in my essays for English class and columns for the school newspaper, which I wrote under the name Jason X.

One quote by Malcolm stood out from the rest: “Of all our studies, history is best qualified to reward our research. And when you see that you’ve got problems, all you have to do is examine the historic method used all over the world by others who have problems similar to yours. And once you see how they got theirs straight, then you know how you can get yours straight.”

I recalled this quote as I edited an article by Diana D'Amico Pawlewicz, a historian of education policy at the University of North Dakota, that seeks to illuminate why test scores on U.S. history have fallen to an all-time low. While Pawlewicz doesn’t profess to know precisely what’s behind the dramatic drop, she does offer her thoughts on a few likely culprits.
