Today we’re listening to Kaki King, an American guitarist from Atlanta. We first featured King back in July 2019. King at a young age was interested in becoming a drummer, which explains her occasional use of the guitar as a percussion instrument.¹ Her latest record, Modern Yesterdays, came out in October 2020. Of its 11 tracks, several were composed for a theater project about modern alienation, whose launch was postponed earlier in the year by the pandemic. “Rhythmic Tiny Sand Ball Patterns” and “Sanitized, Alone” get ambient/experimental, with heavy effects applied to her guitar. We’re also playing her 2003 debut LP, Everybody Loves You, which was an early demonstration of her virtuosity and innovation.
