Odd Jobs - Here's Who Profits off Graduation
Jen “Odd” Glantz here! We’re in the thick of graduation season. I vividly remember my college graduation because it was one of the worst days of my life. I had spent four years earning TWO degrees and I was about to walk across a stage, grab a diploma, and then move back home to my parent’s house without a job, without any money, and without a clue what to do next. My degrees were in poetry and journalism. My resume was mostly blank. Nobody would hire me. I was felt so lost and so low. But looking back, what I didn’t realize then, and what none of my college professors told me, was that you, YES YOU, have to always work to create your own opportunities. Success didn’t find me. I found a million ways to go after it myself. I started a blog and that led me to my first paid writing gigs, an eventual full-time gig as a copywriter, and way down the road - a 6-figure book deal. CREATE YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES, my friend. Make it odd. Make it unusual. Make it something people need. Today I’m chatting about weird gigs people created around graduation season. I can’t wait to hear what you think! PS. But back then, people weren’t making money off getting into a sorority - and staying in one - like they are now. Here are a few examples: Sorority consultants - these people HELP coach you on how to get into a sorority because in some schools it’s super tough and the process is wild. Consultants' services run from $100 for a 90-minute advice session to $1,500 for more hands-on hand-holding. College Admission Money Makers:I once met an SAT tutor who made over $40k a month as an SAT tutor. This company crushes the game with their online test prep help. They probably make millions a year with this bizz model. To stand out in this lane, you need a niche. Example: companies who help people get into ivy league schools. Graduation Odd Gigs:Here are some random trends around graduation that people have spun into businesses: Bed parties are all the rage these days. Decorate college dorm rooms.
