These type of techniques attempts to addresses some of the major limitations of LLMs such as the inability to access recent events, a tendency to fabricate information, difficulties in processing low-resource languages, a lack of mathematical proficiency, and an ignorance of the passage of time. One of the main ways to obtain real time external information is mastering the use of APIs or tools.
